GADGET GIZMO SPECIAL Strap on your virtual seatbelt
PlayStation VR is set for an
October launch, and these are some of most promising gaming experiences that
will come with it
Sony has revealed that its PlayStation VR
headset is scheduled for an October launch, with a price that's lower than that
of the Oculus Rift and HTC Vive, so now it's time to take a look at what will
actually dictate how well it does the games.
The PS VR already has an impressive list of
games announced for it, including several exclusives. Here are ten of the most
promising.
100FT ROBOT GOLF
100ft Robot Golf is already a fairly descriptive
name, but it doesn't even begin to cover the amount of carnage you can cause.
You pilot a 100ft robot and play golf in our regular human-sized world as well
as in space. The game will feature destructible environments, allowing you to
change up the course as you play, and if you still can't win, you could always
just bash in your opponent with that giant golf club.
ACE COMBAT 7
The Ace Combat series has given us some of the
best action flying games of all time. The series has a way of making you feel
like a badass fighter pilot, and a VR version of the game is only going to take
that feeling and crank it up to 11. This is one PS VR exclusive that we hope
will really shine.
GOLEM
Golem is an exclusive PS VR title being worked
upon by ex-Halo and ex-Infamous developers. You play a bedridden girl who can
possess golems of all shapes and sizes. The world looks amazing and interacting
with it in virtual reality looks like it'll be a remarkable experience. If
exploration isn't your thing, the game also allows you to engage in sword
fights with other massive golems.
DREAMS
Media Molecule, of LittleBigPlanet fame, is
developing this PS4 exclusive game with full VR support. The game places
players in the role of a dream-hopping imp, and akin to LBP, the game will
allow users to create and share their own levels (dreams). While the game offers
an aesthetically pleasing art style, its true value will be in the user created
levels, which will undoubtedly showcase innovative uses of PS VR's capability.
GRAN TURISMO SPORT
There's no denying that Xbox's Forza is an
excellent racing series and PS4 players are yet to receive a racing game of
comparable quality. Gran Turismo Sport could very well change that. Series
creator Kazunori Yamauchi has said the VR support experience for GT Sport is
“very good and very natural“, which has us excited to get behind the wheel as
soon as we can.
THE MODERN ZOMBIE TAXI CO.
At first look, this one comes across as a Crazy Taxi clone that involves
zombies, and frankly, that sounds pretty good to us. The game is set in a
post-apocalypse world, where the zombies have won, and now they need a good
public transport service. Enter The Modern Zombie Taxi Co. As one of the zombie
taxi drivers in the game, your job is to drive about a variety of zombies from
point A to point B, and you're free to run over and into anything you wish.
RIGS: MECHANIZED COMBAT LEAGUE
You get to pilot a mech. You get to fight in an
arena. If that alone doesn't have you excited, then not much else will. RIGS
isn't exactly an out-and-out combat game though; it's a much more nuanced
sports game. The different game modes open up different ways to play, and
whether you're scoring goals or shooting other mechs out of the air, this is
one PS VR exclusive you will definitely want to try out.
WHITE DAY
White Day originally came out in 2001 and is a Korean
survival-horror game set in a school. The game sees you play as a student who
finds himself stuck in school with ghosts and ghouls aplenty, with getting out
of there alive being your only objective. As a cinematic first-person game, it
looks like one that would be perfectly suited to a VR experience.
UNTIL DAWN: RUSH OF BLOOD
Horror and VR look like a match made in heaven.
Until Dawn, the PS4 exclusive horror game, is set to have a PS VR exclusive
on-rails shooter spinoff. The game will take place in one of those old-school
haunted houses and srequire you to shoot enemies as you ride the ride. The
atmosphere looks haunting and the game looks like it'll be worth a few scares.
It may not be everything we'd want from a horror VR title, but it could set a good
foundation for the growth of VR games.
ROBINSON: THE JOURNEY
Robinson is a PS VR exclusive title being
developed by Crytek. You play the role of a young boy who has crash landed on a
mysterious planet that appears to be inhabited by dinosaurs.
You have a robotic com panion to guide you and
help you find your bearings. The CryEngine has led to some visually stunning
games and we have high hopes that a VR game created using it will be extremely
immersive and realistic.
