Active Winter Vacations

A sunrise or sunset further adds to the beauty of a destination. Read on for top picks...

In the last month of the year, it’s almost natural to look back and wonder how the year just flew by. Along with nostalgia, December also brings along festivities, parties, vacations, gettogethers. Isn’t it the best time to feel grateful for a wonderful year gone by?
Since we are in nostalgic mode, in this edition today, we have showcased a fine selection of sunrise and sunset spots across the world. As opposed to just sitting back and enjoying the sunrise or go down, we suggest to make things a little interesting by planning a fun activity around it.

ENJOY A ROMANTIC RENDEZVOUS
Region: Greece
The white-washed landscape of Santorini, built up on the rim of the ancient volcano, induces romance like none other. Set across the backdrop of the sea, the towering black cliffs and inky waters peering through the narrow walkways make it perfect for an early morning walk with your loved one. The blue-domed churches of the village, another iconic feature, complement the exotic coastline beside it. Of all the villages and cities on the island, Oia, offers gorgeous views of the Thirassia Island, Volcano of Palia and Nea Kameni, making it perfect to enjoy a picturesque sunset along the Mediterranean Sea. Another way to enjoy the sunset is along a dinner cruisethat allows a glimpse of the landscape from the waterfront. Apart from enjoying the sunrise/sunset along the azure coastline of Greece, the Acropolis of Athens is another spot with the best views during the morning hours. The sun comes up through the columns of the Parthenon and makes for a splendid sight and great pictures too.

WELLNESS AND HISTORY ROLLED INTO ONE
Region: Peru
A yoga and meditation holiday combination is all the new rage. The Inca Trail in Peru is the most famous hike in South America. The growing popularity of the many yoga retreats that host a variety of programmes has attracted many adventure lovers to try something new. You can book an itinerary that allows you to connect with the rich history and culture of the region. The journey allows you to explore the sacred temples in Machu Picchu while meditating, hiking, healing and doing yoga. A typical itinerary will take you through Cusco, Valle, Machu Picchu and Maras Moray. Most tours extended are carefully designed to accommodate yoga and meditation sessions at various scenic points. The magical highlands of Peru’s Sacred Valley and the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu are considered as one of the strongest energy vortexes on the planet. In order to hike up to the entrance of Machu Picchu, you need to make an early start. Once up at the ruins (and if the weather permits) enjoy a session of yoga as the sun rises over the site. You can then enjoy a comprehensive tour of the ruins. Adding an edge of wellness will certainly be a highlight of your experience.

EXPLORE A WINTER WONDERLAND
Region: Arizona, USA
If you are headed to watch the sunrise at the Grand Canyon, waking up before dawn is essential. Grand Canyon’s powerful and inspiring landscape comprising unique combinations of geology and erosional forms decorate the 446km long canyon. To view this marvel of nature in full glory, catch a sunrise or sunset to watch the spectacular cliffs dazzle in the golden glow of the sun. Catch the sunrise at the Yavapai Point, and walk past Mather Point from the Visitor’s Centre. You could also take the Rim Road before you get to the Visitor’s Centre and walk to Yaki. Grand Canyon is famed for its sunrise/sunset, so expect it to be crowded with early-bird campers. The Rim Trail, on the other hand offers a nice spot to perch and take in the gorgeous views. If you are not a morning person, then watch the sun go down at Hopi PointYaki Point or Pima Points. While the prior is fairly popular and offers an unmatched view of the canyon, the latter is equally spectacular and comparatively less congested.

‘PUTT’ INTO THE SUNSET
If you wish to give a classy twist to bringing in an active day, head out on a golfing vacation.
The Garden Route (a 300-kilometre coastal corridor from Mossel Bay in the west to Storms Riverin the east towards the south-eastern end of South Africa) is famed as the Golfing Mecca of the country. Golfers can keep up with their game while vacationing around KnysnaPlettenberg Bayor George. Tee off and enjoy a medley of landscape from ancient forests, to rivers, to wetlands, to dunes, to stretches of beach, to lakes and mountain scenery. Algarve in Portugal with its ideal climate makes for a great year-round destination with most courses located in protected areas. The courses are designed by prestigious players and legendary champions and offer stunning views.
Northland region in New Zealand is another destination that offers an unmatched landscape and well-designed courses.

RISE UP TO CATCH THE SUN
There is no better way to begin the day than with a run. Not only is it rejuvenating but it is the best way to take to the sights and sounds of a new place before the humdrum of the day sets in. In Singapore, the Changi Boardwalk, located near the Changi coast, is probably one of the best places to catch a sunrise and enjoy the morning breeze whisk your face.
Surfers Paradise Beach (between Main Beach and Broadbeach) in Gold CoastAustralia is perfect to watch the surfers catching the morning waves. Besides, the soft sandy course of the beach is perfect for a run.
Sri Lanka’s Arugam Bay, known for surfing, is another spot to watch the sun gracefully emerge from the dark morning sky.
Part of the Fijian archipelago, Taveuni Island (aka Garden Island) sets the perfect backdrop for a sunrise.
