A handset to
keep you away from distractions
The tiny device will impress you with its waterproof
built, 12MP main and 8MP front-facing cameras
The Palm’s back and
it’s tiny. The new Palm smartphone — the company and product are just Palm — is
a little Android phone that’s designed to give you a more portable, less
distracting alternative to your main smartphone. It’s part of a potential trend
of anti-distraction devices. The Palm ($349) is a small lozenge with a
3.3-inch, 1,280x720 screen.
Small and beautiful
The best part of the handset is how it feels. It’s a
phone that fits in your back pocket or your coin pocket. There’s an armband for
it and it’s waterproof. But being small, it’s less immersive than your standard
smartphone. That way it is less distracting.
The UI looks more like the Apple Watch than Android —
it has a scrolling array of app icons that you can tap through. The touch
keyboard is as big as it can be on this small a device, although you can use
voice entry.
Minimise digital distractions
The body is minimalistic and there is no headphone
jack — you are supposed to use wireless headphones. There aren’t any volume
buttons as well. But you can remap the power button to control volume. Under
the hood, it runs Android 8.1 on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 with an X9 LTE
modem.
The device has 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. It
doesn’t have a microSD card slot because you are not watching videos or playing
games here, but it can store a lot of music. There’s no fingerprint sensor, so
you’ll need to use face unlock.
