Smartphone of the future may have 16 camera lenses
Korean tech company has patented a device with
hexadecimal cameras, which beats the current smartphone camera combinations
While dual cameras
have become the norm for mid-range and flagship devices, some smartphone makers
are now opting for three or four cameras as well. LG is reportedly working on
taking this to an all new level with 16 camera lenses at the back.
LG has been granted the patent for a hexadecimal
camera set up that includes a ‘mobile terminal and control method for the
mobile terminal’ by the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The setup
consists of 16 lenses with varying focal lengths and characteristics. While this
may seem too much for a smartphone, the possible applications with the setup
are interesting.
The patent has revealed that the camera lenses have
been placed at a particular curvature so that the different lenses can capture
images at different perspectives.
While capturing an image, a user will be able to
select which lens to capture the image from. Users will also be able to select
multiple lenses to capture images. From this, one will be able to select the
best image or combine the images taken by the different lenses to make a moving
image.
The patent also mentions that users will be able to
capture wide-angle shots in addition to improved portrait images. Another
interesting application is the ability to stitch various parts of different
images together and the ability to manipulate the images after taking a
picture. Part of the photos could also be cut to replace one part with another
object from an image that has been captured by another lens.
In the front, the device is expected to sport a
single selfie camera. However, one will also be able to use the rear camera
setup to take selfies.
