6 foods to Keep Viral At Bay
|
|
Romantic as the monsoon may be, it is
always accompanied by illnesses — viral, malaria, dengue, typhoid — thanks to
the damp and filthy conditions it creates. Healthians' senior nutritionist,
Sakshi Saxena, suggests some immune boosting foods to add to your diet to
avoid these ailments

#1 Garlic
Allicin, the major active component
found in garlic, is responsible for its antimicrobial and antibacterial
properties.
#2 Fluids
You should drink plenty of fluids
such as herbal tea, masala chai, yoghurt, etc. Soups are especially good to
have during monsoons as they help fight cold and flu and also rejuvenate the
body.
#3 Bitter veggies
Have dark, leafy and bitter veggies
such as bitter gourd, neem, aloe vera, spinach, tulsi, methi seeds, broccoli
and wheatgrass – that help prevent infections.
#4 Turmeric
Intake of turmeric in this season is
quite helpful. A simple home remedy of hot milk with a pinch of turmeric
powder prevents throat infection, cough and fever.
#5 Fruit
The power of fruits is real and helps
restore energy. Opt for those rich in Vitamin C such as oranges, sweet lime,
apples, pomegranate, pears, pineapple, lime and amla. It helps fight
infections and keeps the body free of diseases.
#6 Whole grains
Consume oats, brown rice and wheat
bread, since they are easy to digest and help fight infections.

*** Foods to Avoid
Sugar:
It weakens your immune system and
helps bacteria grow; avoid it especially when you're under stress or in the
middle of the cold season.
Fat:
Opt for foods that are grilled,
steamed or baked to avoid stomach cramps.
Raw and street foods:
It's better to control the foodie in
you for 2-3 months than to go through sickness and bear the pain.
