WHAT I LEARNT FROM MY COMPETITOR(9)
“Disrupt or be Disrupted“
VG Siddhartha, Founder, Coffee Day Group
CLAIM TO FAME: After
getting into the coffee trading business in 1993, he started his first café
three years later, emerging as a pioneer in the business
THE LESSON: When we
launched our business almost two decades ago our initial learnings came from
two sources: our own instinct and a few great brands. Following the work of
these brands and their founders has benefited us immensely in shaping our brand
today. The café industry is still in its fledgling stage in India. As an
industry all the players need to grow it together and learn from each other. At
the end of the day all we want is the best for the consumer.
The few guiding principles
that we have learnt from great brands and founders over the years can be summed
up as: One, the power of purpose: In the face of incredible challenges it is
the conviction of purpose that will keep you laser-focused towards your goals and
beliefs; two, disrupt or be disrupted . The world and the consumers are moving
much faster then our brand .We have to think in terms of revolution and not
just evolution; three, customer experience fosters success: In our business the
moment of success is the consumer appreciation. They should be influencing our
next big ideas. We are constantly learning and striving to improve consumer
experience.
We understand that to build
and mature great brands it needs decades of endurance, patience and constant learning.
Even after two decades in the business, we continue to be life-long learners.
