Romancing Bruges
Take a ride in a horse-drawn
carriage to soak in the bucolic landscape or just saunter around the
cobblestone streets this Flemish fairy tale town can turn cynics into
die-hard romantics
When you think of romantic
get aways, images of candlelit dinners, luxurious accommodation and long walks
on the beach come to mind. But some destinations need none of these; just a
certain je ne sais quoi about them makes them insanely enchanting. Bruges,
capital of West Flanders, the western-most province of Belgium, is a city out
of a fairy tale. There's something in the air that makes you crave for your
lover's company even if you don't believe in PDA.
FOR UNEXPECTED PLEASURES
Immortalised in the crime
caper In Bruges, the city galvanises you by its historic beauty which is
largely unspoilt by progress. Postcardperfect market squares brimming with
antique lace boutiques, artisan chocolate shops, soaring clock towers, gothic
churches, canals with arched footbridges and old whitewashed almshouses all
transport you to a forgotten era. The Old Town isn't designed to accommodate
vehicles as it was built before motor cars were invented. You'll see the
locals, as old as 80-year-olds, getting around on bikes. The heart of Bruges is
its Markt Square (market) dominated by the towering Belfort (bell tower) that
stands 83 metres tall and offers jaw dropping views of the expanse of the
quaint town below. If you are strong-willed, scale its 366 steep, narrow steps.
The view is worth the climb. The atmospheric Markt is also an ideal place to
sit and enjoy delicious and reasonably-priced snacks, like the popu lar frites
and mayonnaise or local hits such as mussels, North Sea prawns, creamcovered
waffles and apple tart. The medieval town, also known as Venice of the North,
boasts of several spots that leave you speechless. Wake up early and slip off
to the secluded Beguinage (enclosed community for women who dedicated their
lives to God without retiring from the world) for some serenity. The walled
oasis of religious calm, with its impressive courtyard, wind-bent trees,
white-painted cobblestones and limitless silence charms even the greatest
cynic. For the inquisitive his torian in you, visit the Basilica of the Holy Blood
it has a fascinating history. There's a lot to see a beautiful Romanesque
lower chapel, a striking Gothic upper chapel, and stained glass and murals to
take your breath away.

A perfect way to lose
yourself in the charm of the World Heritage City is to explore it on foot,
keeping a walking-route map handy. Start your walk from the market place, down
Wolle straat and on to the canals.
The map will act as a
guide, helping you discover the less touristy attractions with ease.If you are
short of time, a 30 minute boat tour is the best way to see the old
town.Fascinated by the sound of clicking hooves? Do it in the manner of the
Middle Ages by hir ing a horse-drawn carriage. Whatever mode of transport you
choose, be sure to visit the aptly named `Lake of Love' (Minnewater Lake). The
colours and grace of swans make this a beauti ful and relaxing retreat from the
lively city.
