(2) VINATI KISTIA
VINATI KASTIA, PARTNER, AZB &PARTNERS
Graduating
from National Law School, Bangalore in 1996, Kastia's ambition
was
to become a litigation lawyer, arguing cases in court. Her first brush with
transactional
work, which makes up the bulk of the revenue of corporate law firms,
was
when she was asked to work with the non-litigation team during court
holidays
in 1997. “This was a career defining moment for me,“ she says.
“When
I look back, it seems like such a beautiful accident.
Those
formative years taught me to have an open mind and the value of
`never
say never.“
Kastia
has succeeded big time as a corporate lawyer, both at Amarchand
Mangaldas
and then at AZB, where she was promoted to partner at a relatively
young
age. “Many young women lawyers have come up and told me that they
look
at me as an inspiration. While I do not be lieve that I deserve this accolade
it
surely feels like a significant achievement,“ she says. Kastia considers
Ajay
Bahl, one of AZB's founding partners, to be her mentor and in the next
phase
of her career, she is keen to mentor others. “I want to be able to contribute
more
to AZB's knowledge management and associate development programs.
It
would give me an opportunity to interact with fresh young minds, which
helps
overall professional, personal and intellectual growth.“
Mantra
for Success: “Hard work, integrity and a whole lot of common sense“
Advice
to other women: “If you face discrimination or harassment of any type,
raise
your voice“
The
glass ceiling: “Only when relationships between men and women become
socially
and economically equal will the glass ceiling shatter.
This
is easier said than done and both men and women need to strive towards it“
