WHERE BEST TO GO IN JULY
JULY
1 AUSTRALIA Melbourne and its surrounds are great for winter food &
winter sports, and Great Ocean Road has terrific whale-watching. Head into the
interiors to explore Uluru, and take in camel races at Alice Springs. It’s also
wildflower season in W Australia (australia.com).
2 ICELAND Get your coffee and stay up all night — if the sun can do
it, why can’t you? The midnight-sun months are fantastic in this surreal
country, & it’s fairly warm, even by the water. It might get crowded, but
experiences like these are few and far between (visiticeland.com).
3 SAN FERMIN, SPAIN Like three footloose Bollywood stars, you can run with the
bulls — or, if you have a family that awaits your return, just go watch. Book
as early as possible — both a hotel room and a space on a balcony in Pamplona (sanfermin.com).
4 SAN JUAN ISLANDS, US These islands have a bunch of orcas (killer whales) that
appear in summertime. The islands are also known for their wild, unspoilt
beauty, and are home to plenty of other players like seals, sea lions and bald
eagles (visitsanjuans.com).
5 NEW ZEALAND South Island is the place to go if you like snow, craggy
landscapes and excellent beer & wine. Take a driving trip that takes in
glaciers at Franz Josef, skiing at Wanaka & adventure sports at Queenstown.
Try the east coast, which has an end-of-the-world feel, and Wellington, buzzing
with plays & concerts (newzealand.com).
AVOID! RUSSIA This is the warmest time in Russia, as well as the main tourist season for both visitors and Russians, so getting bookings can be tough. It’s also a wet time in European Russia, so you’ll have to get your fill of ballets and fur hats another time.
