AUGUST
1 INDIA Monsoon is in full swing: Kerala hosts its famous boat
races, Jaipur the Teej Festival, and Maharashtra is best for treks and rafting,
while Uttarakhand’s Valley of Flowers is in bloom. 2 ROCKLAND, MAINE, US The
little town of Rockland hosts an annual lobster festival, starring the massive,
delicious Maine lobster, in the first week of August. Also on offer are cities
like New York City & Boston close by (mainelobsterfestival.com).
3 CANADA The bears are out, gorging themselves in preparation for the
winter: head to British Columbia to see them heading to the rivers to catch
salmon swarming upstream (hellobc.com).
4 ARGENTINA From August 13 to 27, Argentina celebrates its most famous product
(apart from Che “T-shirt” Guevara) with a tango festival in Buenos Aires
(tangobuenosaires.gob.ar).
5 BRAZIL Yes, we’re sending you back to Brazil, but for real
wildlife, not frisky ladies in feathers. The huge Pantanal wetland, home to one
of the healthiest jaguar populations, is driest at this time, making sightings
easier (visitbrasil.com).
AVOID!
JORDAN Hot, baking, faint-in-theheat hot. Jordan’s lovely, but other times of the year are better.
