5 PRODUCTS THAT STOOD OUT AT IFA 2018
ACER PREDATOR THRONOS
This cockpit-style gaming chair from Acer is 5-feet
tall and weighs over 200kg! It has a curved motorized arm to mount three
27-inch monitors side-by-side for an immersive gaming experience. The chair has
a control pad you can use to adjust the angle of the chair, footrest or to move
the monitor arm up and down. You get a space to secure the keyboard and mouse
in front of you and a dedicated space in the rig to store your Predator CPU
cabinet. The whole rig can light up in blue or white. No details on price and
availability have been announced yet.
HUAWEI KIRIN 980 PROCESSOR
Huawei launched their new flagship processor at the
show. So why did this stand out? For starters, this is the world’s first
processor based on a 7nm architecture. It also offers dual NPUs (neural
processing units). What this means is better performance, enhanced AI
capabilities, superior cameras and improved battery life. Huawei claims that
the 980 delivers 20% better performance and 40% less power consumption compared
to the Kirin 970. This will be the processor inside flagship Huawei and Honor
phones for the next year. The first device with Kirin 980 should be out in
October 2018.
LENOVO YOGA BOOK C930
In 2016, Lenovo showcased the Yoga Book: a 10-inch
laptop with a touchscreen instead of a physical keyboard. At IFA 2018, they
showcased a new device in this series. Only this time, instead of a standard
touchscreen, it has an e-ink display. The entire laptop weighs just 790 grams
and comes with a 10.8-inch main display with a 2k resolution. The e-ink display
can be used as an e-reader, as a notepad to write on as well as to show a
keyboard with haptic feedback for typing. You can get it in a choice of Intel
Core m5 or i5 processor with 4GB RAM and 256GB storage. Despite the weight,
Lenovo claims a battery life of up to 10 hours. It will be priced US$ 999
onwards and available from October 2018.
SONY XPERIA XZ3
Sony’s latest flagship phone is one of the first to
come with Android 9.0. It is also Sony’s first phone with a curved OLED display
— it has a 6-inch, 18:9 screen with a resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels. The
phone is water proof (IP68 certified), has the current top-of-the-line
Snapdragon 845 processor, 4GB RAM, 64GB storage and a 3,300mAh battery. There
is a 19MP rear camera with laser and phase detection autofocus, 4k video and
slow-motion video (1080p at 960fps). Other features include a 13MP selfie
shooter, rear fingerprint scanner, stereo speakers and USB Type-C port. We
expect the XZ3 to be launched towards the end of October 2018.
SAMSUNG AND LG 8K TV
Both display giants showcased upcoming TVs with 8k
resolution at IFA 2018. An 8K TV has a staggering resolution of 7680 x 4320
pixels. In comparison, 4K TVs have a resolution of 4096 x 2160 pixels.
Samsung’s 8K TV will be available in 65,75,82 and 85-inch sizes. They all have
4000 nits brightness, support for HDR10+ and AI upscaling. In comparison, LG
showcased only an 88-inch size OLED 8K TV. Details regarding specifications,
price and availability were not announced but we expect 8K to start making its
way to consumers by the end of 2018.
