Tourists gain spiritual inspiration from a rock that defies gravity
GOLDEN ROCKRegion: Myanmar or former Burma Legend has it that the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda,
also known as Golden Rock has been defying gravity since many centuries
now, precariously perched on a strand of the Buddha's hair. This renowned
Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State of Myanmar (formerly Burma) is a small
pagoda built on top of a granite boulder. It's beauty actually gleams in sunlight
as it is covered with gold leaves pasted on by devotees.
UNIQUE FEATURES
The rock and the pagoda are at the top of Mt Kyaiktiyo. And it is considered the
third most important Buddhist pilgrimage site (after the Shwedagon Pagoda and
the Mahamuni Pagoda). Many followers believe that a mere glimpse of the
gravity-defying Golden Rock is believed to be enough of an inspiration for any
person to seek blessings of Buddhism.
FOOD & GIFTS
Tourists who visit the pagoda later like to take a stroll to the adjoining plaza and
the Potemkin Village where restaurants, gift shops, and guest houses are
located. Good news for visitors is that a new terrace can be used from which
you can get a good view of the rock and the pagoda.
