GIZMO SPECIAL Watches That Do More Than Just Tell Time
Even
though you probably use a cellphone to tell time, the humble wrist watch is
not dead.
Six
advanced watches with features that the geek in you will appreciate
Timex Adventure
Series Depth Gauge
18,495
Designed for divers, this watch from the Timex Adventure series features a
depth gauge in the dial. On the side of the large, black stainless steel
case, you can see the pressure sensor which uses microprocessors to show
you the depth reading (up to 60 meters). It has a mineral glass crystal for
added protection, is calibrated for seawater and is water resistant to a
depth of 200 meters (over 650 feet). It also has a date display, analog
temperature gauge and a recall function for minimum temperature and maximum
depth reading. The Indigo night light (with a night-mode) makes it easy to
view various readings underwater.
Tissot T-Touch Expert
60,000 onwards
This watch is the techie’s
dream. You can get it in a variety of styles (rubber/stainless/titanium
bands) and it truly packs in an amazing amount of tech into a simple dial
without any sub-dials or indicators. Press the ‘T’ button on the side and
the scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass becomes touch sensitive — a tap
on the various sections of the glass will activate features like
thermometer, barometer, digital compass, digital stopwatch, countdown timer
and altimeter. With the touch layer still active, just tap in the center
and the hands move back to telling the time. It can also display dual time
zones with dual alarms while the integrated LCD has a red backlight.
Casio Edifice ERA-300 19,995
This new analog-digital watch from the Edifice series is a twin sensor unit
(compass and thermometer) that allows you to check your bearing at a
glance. It also features a stopwatch, 29-zone world time indicator, 5
alarms, mineral glass, stainless steel case/band, auto calendar and an
estimated battery life of 2 years. Pressing the large button at the
9-o-clock position instantly puts the watch into compass mode. It also
features one of Casio’s innovations in lighting — called the ‘neon
illuminator’, the light system uses blacklight (ultraviolet) LED technology
that makes just the markers and hands glow brightly. You can adjust the
duration of the backlight as well. You can get the same watch in your
choice of red or blue markers (as shown).
Casio Calculator Watch (Youth
Series)
2,395
Few things evoke more geek
nostalgia than the calculator watch. It sounds unbelievable, but there’s a
complete, functional calculator built into that small space with 16
individual, tiny keys (apart from the four buttons on the watch case
itself). The keys are shaped so as to allow you to press them with a finger
or the blunt end of a pen. It has an amber LED light, stainless steel band,
claimed 10-year battery life, a Databank that supports 25 entries, 8-digit
display, stopwatch, five alarms, auto calendar and built in currency
conversion. As if that wasn’t enough, the entire watch weighs a
featherlight 62 grams.
Timex
Expediton WS4
12,895
This funky multi-function watch
from the Timex Expedition range features a unique four function widescreen
LCD with an intuitive user interface. The idea behind the widescreen is
that you can see more information at a glance. You can get it with either a
conventional rubber strap or an elastic strap. The elastic fits comfortably
on the wrist and can be expanded to wear over gloves or other protection
gear when required. Thanks to the composite case and stainless steel top
plate, the watch is water resistant up to 50m. An evenly lit ‘Indiglo’
lighting system easily lets you see smaller details of the display in the
dark. It includes an altimeter, barometer, compass, chronograph, timer,
alarm and thermometer. It also has an activity review mode that tracks
various functions performed in the last 30 minutes.
Casio Edifice EMA-100

Line of watches, the EMA-100 has both an analog and a digital display. It
has an auto LED backlight function and shows temperature, a countdown
timer, moon data (moon phase graph, moon age on specific date) and an
analog tide indicator. It may be designed like a typical marine diver’s
watch, but it also lives up to the design by being water resistant up to a
depth of 200 meters. You can use it to set four daily alarms, use it as a
stopwatch with different measuring modes and view world time across 29
different time zones. Casio says that the watch’s battery life is up to 3
years under normal use. You can get the same watch in either a stainless
steel band (shown) or a rubber strap.
