If you’re not on the smartwatch bandwagon yet, chances are that you’re looking for a good enough reason. Samsung now has three new smartwatches: Gear 2, Gear 2 Neo and this, the Gear Fit. The 'Galaxy' name is gone because these devices are not powered by Android.
The Gear Fit is a hybrid fitness wearable and smartwatch. It’s also the first wearable with a curved display — and what a display it is! Easily the highlight of the watch, the 1.84-inch amoled display offers eye-popping colours, deep blacks & fantastic viewing angles. It has a rubber strap that is easily removable and smartly keeps the focus on the watch face. The whole watch is a feather light 27 grams — so light that you’ll hardly notice it once worn.
The curve serves two primary functions: it helps the device ‘stick’ to your wrist better (necessary for heart rate measurement) and it looks incredible. The screen stays off till you press the button on the side but it also comes on if you flick your wrist. Since the display is longer rather than wider, you scroll up/ down to access the built in apps: sleep tracker, pedometer, exercise coach, media controller, stopwatch, timer, heart rate and find my device. Coming to notifications, everything you want to be notified of can be set from the Gear Fit manager — a necessary download to use the watch. Everything worked great and icing on the cake is the battery that should easily last you three days (provided you are not using it at night for sleep tracking).
While we loved the Gear Fit, it needs a little bit more to really find appeal with the huge mass of Android users. For instance, we would have liked the ability to design our own watchfaces or install additional apps. Appeal is also limited because it only works with Galaxy devices. Saving grace, the price is palatable and puts it in the impulse buy category, especially if you already have a high-end Galaxy.
