GADGET GIZMO REVIEW Asus Transformer Book T100
There has been a recent surge in the number of laptop/tablet hybrid devices in India. However, Asus is the first one to launch a hybrid with the latest Intel Atom processor and Windows 8.1.
There are a few things about the T100 that instantly impressd us. At 550 grams (tablet only) and 1.07kg (with keyboard dock), it is one of the lightest 10-inch hybrids available today. It runs the latest Intel Atom ‘Bay Trail’ quad-core processor, has 2GB RAM, 32GB flash storage and a microSD slot that accepts 64GB cards. Asus also bundles unlimited cloudstorage for the first year.
The 10-inch touchscreen display has a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels with excellent viewing angles and great touch response. Build quality is impressive, but the keyboard dock does not feel up to the mark. Like most hybrids, this one too has a display that limits you from opening it up all the way.
While we loved the brushed metal finish on the keyboard dock and the fact that it adds a full size USB 3.0 port, typing was not comfortable. The keys are smaller and placed too close together for typing. The trackpad is smooth, but both-trackpad buttons feel frail.
Multimedia performance is one of its strongpoints. Full HD video playback is butter-smooth while audio output is surprisingly loud for the size. Battery life is also impressive — we got over 8 hours from a full charge with mixed use of multimedia, web browsing and document editing.
While the Asus T100 impresses with its perfor mance, the keyboard dock is a letdown. If you can extend your budget a bit, Lenovo's IdeaPad Lynx offer similar specifications but with a slightly larger 11.6-inch display.
