The Touch is Kobo's most basic eReader. It has a 6-inch pearl (matte finish) e-ink display and an understated design. It has a home button and power switch — everything else is done with touch. As is tradition with basic readers, you get the device and a USB cable.
Although it has no user serviceable parts, the back cover easily pops off revealing a 1,000mAh liion battery and a 4GB micro SD card (which is in addition to the outward facing micro SD slot). Considering that ebooks barely take up any space at all, the 4GB card inside should be more than enough for most people.
The device starts up fast from sleep and loads up a book fairly quickly too. You can read multiple books and they’ll resume from where you left off. All the usual fare is there: multiple dictionaries, bookmarks, font customisation and touch area customisation (you can define areas on the screen for page back/forward). A great feature is the ability to customise how often the screen completely refreshes. Partial refreshes leave slight residue but page turns are faster. The screen is fairly high res and comfortable to read on as long as there is enough ambient light. The only issues we found were occasional lag (where it would freeze up for a second or two) and inadvertent page turns while reading.
The Kobo Touch does everything that an eReader should, but after reading a couple of books end-toend, we reached the conclusion that an eReader without a front light is quite limiting. If you want affordable, we feel that it’s a lot better if you go for the basic, nontouch Kindle at 5,999. Spend just 3,000 more and you will get the excellent Kindle Paperwhite which remains our favourite e-ink eReader device.
