WHAT’S HOT
Good design: The Mate sports an elegant design; it is made of plastic, but it feels good to hold because of its matte finish. Besides, the slight curve in the handset’s back panel makes it much easier to hold when compared to other similar-sized devices.
Colourful screen: Its 720p IPS screen boasts excellent viewing angles and good
colours. Under direct sunlight, however, you might have to switch to manual
brightness for clearer viewing. Good battery life: The phone’s battery
lasts for around 16 to 17 hours when used with 3G, to play games, watch videos,
browse the web, and make and receive calls.
Camera: The Mate can shoot sharp and vibrant images in good light
(though the amount of detail could have been better). In low-light, noise and
grain is kept in check. The only issue with its camera is its focus mechanism,
which is slow and inaccurate, especially during video shoots.
WHAT’S NOT
Performance: The handset was sluggish at times: scrolling on the device is not smooth – and during multi-tasking, there was a discernable lag. Sometimes the touchscreen failed to detect input at the first instance.
No app drawer: On the Ascend Mate, Huawei has removed the app drawer from its UI. All apps are put onto your home screens or inside folders. If you have used Android earlier, the lack of an app drawer can be frustrating. Also, we found the bundled touch keyboard to be poor.
