Having a phone with a quad core processor is a good way to show off. That's why there are suddenly a lot of lower priced quad core smartphones around. However, Karbonn has tried to stand out from the crowd with the S1 Titanium — it is, as of now, the cheapest phone powered by a quad core processor.
It has a glossy finish on the front and rear, making it a fingerprint and smudge magnet. The 4.5-inch display offers good touch response and has high brightness. Karbonn claims the phone uses an IPS display, but we found that viewing angles were quite poor.
Qualcomm’s quad core processor & 1GB RAM at this price is the most impressive feature. Performance from the phone is fantastic be it gaming, multimedia or multitasking. We did find the default user interface to be a bit slow (especially with all the animations, but this can be fixed by getting a different launcher). The 5MP rear camera is an average performer. Images taken in daylight were good enough to view on the phone’s display and share on the web, but colours were generally washed out. Due to the limitation of the Adreno 203 GPU, it is only capable of recording videos in 720p resolution. Also, it constantly tries to focus when the camera is moved around, leading to a lot of blurry videos.
The battery struggled to last a full day — another disappointment. We say that the S1 offers a good Android experience, but has its fair share of quirks. If you can, we recommend stretching your budget and getting the Micromax Canvas HD — it has a larger and better quality display, better camera, more capable hardware and better battery life.
