MUSIC SPECIAL...FOR YOUR SOUL

MUSIC FOR YOUR SOUL

Discover the healing powers of music

Music has the power to transform our mood, soothe us when we are disturbed or in pain and also motivate us. A study revealed that listening to music, you consider joyful, for about 30 minutes, helps relieve pain and reduce stress.
It is believed that when we listen to music, our heartbeat, breath and brain waves begin to react in response to what we’re listening. Try these tips to benefit from sound therapy:
GET RID OF STRESS

To get rid of stress, listen to soothing music for 20 minutes — choose an instrumental music albums of chants. Wear your headphones and lie down comfortably on a couch or on the floor. Focus on the notes and drift away.
CHOOSE SLOW MUSIC TO RELAX

Choose music with a slow rhythm; slower than the natural heart beat, i.e. about 72 beats per minute. Music that has a cyclical pattern is found to be effective in most people.
GET INTO THE MUSIC

As the music plays, just get immersed in it completely. Concentrate on your breathing — take deep slow breaths and make it regular. Concentrate on the silence between the notes in the music. This will help you to relax completely.
FAST MUSIC MOTIVATES
If you need motivation after a day of work, go for faster music rather than slow, calming one.
FAMILIAR MUSIC CALMS YOU

When the going gets tough, go for music you are familiar with — such as a childhood favourite or favourite oldies. Familiarity breeds calm.
WALK WITH MUSIC

Take walks with your favourite music playing on your ipod. Inhale and exhale in tune with the music. This can work as a great stress-buster. — Compiled by Debarati S Sen
GO FOR A NATURE TRAIL
Listening to sounds of nature, such as ocean waves or the calm of a deep forest can reduce stress. Try taking a 15 to 20 minute walk if you’re near the seashore or a quiet patch of woods.
