It’s time for Africa
Visit the
bio-diverse Savanna belt that runs across the continent to learn about a
different ecology
Region: Ethiopia, Tanzania,
Kenya, Uganda and Zimbabwe
The continent of Africa features two giant belts of
Savanna running East and West. From the top of Senegal to Ethiopia,
and the another across the middle of Namibia all the way upto South Africa, showcase a seamless transition from jungle to
desert. This giant swath of territory is home to over 2 million species of mammals. There
are almost 500 species of birds, and 55 species of acacia in the Serengeti Plains. With a diverse
ecosystem, it offers many incredible adventures for holidayers to pursue.
TAP INTO THE WILD SIDE
Head to Eastern part of Africa for a wildlife safari;
visit classic examples of tropical Savanna such
as the Serengeti in Tanzania or Masai Mara in Kenya. A game drive
after dawn or before sunset is perfect for amateur photographers. The Savanna's
remarkable wildlife is most active at these times of day. See groups of
warthogs, elephants walking single file, lions gazing across the horizon and
herds of grazing antelopes,
tails flicking in the dim light. They have the largest diversity of hoofed
animals in the world including wildebeest,
buffalos, zebras, and rhinoceros.
EXPLORE TRIBAL CULTURE
Bomas, the villages in the Savanna where Masai people
live is perfect for a day excursion. The tribal children are deeply fascinated by the cameras. You
stand a chance to meet the natural healers and artisan of the community which allows you to enjoy a glimpse
of the nomadic life in the Savanna.
Culture centres also allow you to enjoy a show of traditional dance and music.
GO BIRD WATCHING
Head out on a nature trail lead by a trained guide
from a rural village to gaze at the ubiquitous Marabou stork, the bright pink
flamingo, hornbill, spoonbill and more. Kenya offers great opportunities
for guided birdwatching safaris.
TRY AN ADVENTURE
Another way to enjoy the Savanna landscape is through
whitewater rafting or bungee jumping adventure.
Uganda offers activities that focus on adventures on
the Nile. Rafting tours for bird watching near the Victorian source of the Nile
are popular. If you wish to enjoy great views of the Savanna, you can join a
trek to the top of Mount Kenya in Kenya or Mount Kilimanjaro, just across the
border in Tanzania.
