POSITIVE
THINKING
Do you think great leaders are pessimists?
I’m
confident your first thought will be… “Of course not!”
And
you’d be right.
While
it’s impossible to have a 100% positive mental outlook all the time, the
world’s top leaders such as Elon Musk, Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos certainly
come close.
Whether
they were lucky enough to be born with a super-positive mindset, or developed
one over time, it’s clear that they could never have achieved their amazing
success without this invaluable trait.
What exactly is positivity?
Stated
simply, positivity is the way you think and feel about:
- Events that happened to you in
the past
- Events that are happening to
you right now
- Events that you expect to
happen in the future
To
be positive means you look for the best in all situations and envision
favorable outcomes at all times. And looking back at past events, you learn
from your mistakes and gain motivation from you successes.
Former
American professional baseball player Wade Boggs commented:
“A
positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and
outcomes. It is a catalyst and it sparks extraordinary results.”
Very
well said!
Of
course, positive thinking is not wishful thinking.
On
the contrary, true positivity is grounded in realism and action. It’s the
difference between just hoping that you can achieve something - and actually
taking the necessary steps to achieve it.
For
example:
Imagine
you desperately wanted to get promoted at work.
You
could picture the promotion in your mind every night , but in all likelihood -
you could be doing this for years and years and never move up the career
ladder.
On
the other hand, if you believed you could be promoted and then took action to
achieve it (such as by taking relevant courses to improve your skills, talking
to your manager about new opportunities, etc.), you’d be odds on to achieve
promotion within a relatively short period of time.
How does positivity influence leadership?
From
my experience of starting businesses from scratch, I can tell you that without
a super-positive outlook, my companies would never have gotten off the ground.
There are countless problems when trying to grow a company, and without
positivity, you’d almost certainly give up after the first few challenging
situations.
Through
experience, I’ve learned that a positive mindset is the difference that
separates the average achievers from the big-league achievers.
Leadership,
of course, is not just about navigating the success of your company. It’s also
about directing and assisting all those who report to you--as well as leading
more and more clients to your door!
Positivity
is contagious, and great leaders use this to spread enthusiasm, commitment and
focus. They literally trigger a positive wave that impacts all people within
their company and everyone who comes into contact with their company.
If
you want to emulate the success of great leaders, then you must develop your
positivity and allow it to be embedded in all your words and actions. Do this,
and people will like you, respect you and will also naturally regard you as a
leader.
