Small cameras are now packing a whole
lot more without sacrificing that pro ‘feel’

Canon has launched their new EOS M5
mirrorless camera, a 24.2 megapixel mirrorless camera that sports an APS-C
sized CMOS sensor, similar to what is used in their larger DSLR models. As
with their flagship DSLRs, this sensor is also based on their Dual Pixel AF
CMOS that enables snappy focusing while capturing both photographs and videos.
The new camera is also designed to
more closely deliver an experience generally associated with a DSLR, complete
with the molded grip on the right and overall design. At its heart is their
new DIGIC 7 image processor that delivers a maximum ISO of 25,600 and a burst
rate of up to 9 fps (or 7 fps when focus tracking is used.)
There is a built-in electronic
viewfinder with 2.36 million dots, as well as a 3.2-inch tilting LCD
touchscreen (85-degrees up, 180-degrees down) with 1.62 million dots of
resolution. The camera also provides image stabilization by way of a
digitally implemented 5-axis shake prevention system, that can function when
paired with non-IS lenses as well.
On the connectivity front, the camera
integrates NFC as well as WiFi for image sharing and camera control. Video
capture on the M5 is unfortunately limited to 1080p--no 4K, as has been
increasingly the norm.
The camera will be sold beginning
November 2016 for $979 (approximately Rs 65,613) for the body, or $1,099 (Rs
73,655) along with its 15-45mm f/3.5-6.3 IS STM kit zoom lens.
