Making of an Android superphone
Five apps you should install
to unlock the full potential of your Android phone
If you have an Android
smartphone, you not only have the features of fered by the manufacturer, but
with a little work, you can also have those features which are missing, turning
your smartphone in a `superphone'. Install these apps and take control of what
features you want to add on to your already feature-rich phone.
Double tap your screen to turn it onoff
LG and Asus phones comes
with this nifty feature, where you can turn your screen on and off with a
double tap, or a wave over the phone.
Access that feature and
more, with the Gravity Screen app. There is a pocket sensor, which will turn
the screen off when it is in your pocket; a table sensor which detects when the
phone is on a table and turn it off if not in use; and you can turn the screen
on by moving the device. The app can be integrated with automation apps like
Tasker, Llama and others.
Discreet notifications
Access to notifications
goes to some other level with this extremely useful app. The AcDisplay app
emulates the feature available for phones with AMOLED screens, which lights
discreetly when there is a new notification when the screen is locked. With
AcDisplay, see your notifications pop up on a minimal beautiful screen, remain
for a while and then disappear. You can also choose to launch the app or
dismiss the notification, with just a swipe of the icon. The app also makes use
of available sen sors (proximity, accelerometer) to turn on the screen when you
take it out of your pocket, or when you pick up from a table.
Bluelight filter
Scientific research sug
gests that exposure of blue light, which your smart phones and tablets abun
dantly emit, distort your natural rhythm of sleep and create difficulty in
falling asleep at night. The Twilight app makes your screen adapt to the time
of the day. It will filter the blue light emitted by your device after sunset
to protect your eyes, with a soft red filter. The filter intensity is adjusted
to the sun cycle based on your local sunrise and sunset times. Use Twilight to
protect your eyes, when reading in your bed before sleep and get a good night's
sleep.
Essential information on your lock screen
Once in a while, there
comes along an app which you never thought you needed until you use it. The
Dashclock widget belongs to that league. On the surface, it is a simple clock
widget which sits discreetly on your home and lock screen.
Dive in a little further
and a plethora of options open up. With the Dashclock widgets and the myriad of
extensions available in the Play Store, you can get all the information from
missed calls to unread emails to cricket scores, right on your lock screen, in
a minimalist way.
Custom ROM features on your stock ROM
Custom ROMs have been
around a while, and they are just as tedious to install and use. Now we have
Gravit y Box, a tweak box which brings all those features available in custom
ROMs, ready to be implemented as and when you wish. You can tweak almost every
aspect of your phone, right from the lock screen to the status bar to the app
drawer style. The list of customisation options is almost endless and one
usually tends to spend an hour or so inside the app setting up the phone.
However, this app is not available at the play store. You need to root your
phone and download the Xposed Framework, through which, you can download
Gravity Box.
