ZIPPING ALONG THE FAMOUS CALIFORNIA STATE ROUTE 1
Bagging the title of being one of
the most 3 beautiful stretches in the USA, this impres sive highway hugs the
edge of central California for 656 miles.
We suggest you plan your road trip
from Los Angeles all the way to San Francisco a journey of some 424 winding
miles that is blessed with incredible scenery. This is an adventure that could
last a week if travellers choose to take it slow as there is much to see en
route. Near Los Angeles is the pretty resort town of Santa Barbara and remote
coves, such as Point Sal State Beach. Then, north of San Luis Obispo, the road
hits its stride, the Pacific roaring to land at Cape San Martin, the trees of
Los Padres National Forest welling up on the other side of the tarmac. Further
on, Big Sur is a celebrated stop, grab a quick bite at the quaint restaurants
and stretch your legs over a cuppa piping coffee.
WITH A CULINARY BENT OF MIND
The Pacific Coast Highway is a
spectacular drive for visitors looking to explore California's culinary scene.
San Diego serves superb Mexican-style cuisine, Santa Barbara offers nice wines.
Monterey boasts of fresh seafood, whilst Paso Robles offers local produce from
its surrounding farms and fields. Visitors will also find local fare at
farmer's markets en route. And you must make some time to venture here and pick
some goodies too.
ELIGIBILITY TIPS
Indian visitors can legally drive a
car in the USA for up to 12 months using their home driver's licence. However,
an International Driving Permit (IDP) will have more credibility with US
traffic police. Your automobile association at home can issue an IDP, valid for
one year. Always carry your home driver's licence together with the
IDP.Insurance:
Don't put the key into the ignition
if you don't have insurance, which is legally required, otherwise you risk
financial ruin and legal consequences if there's an accident.
If you already have auto insurance,
or if you buy travel insurance that covers car rentals, make sure your policy
has adequate liability coverage for where you will be driving; it probably
does, but beware that states specify different minimum levels of coverage.
Car Rentals:
Most rental companies require that
you have a major credit card along with a valid driver's licence.
