Samsung redefined digital note taking and the use of a stylus with their Galaxy Note series. With the Tegra Note, Xolo has launched a tablet that offers similar features at an affordable price.
The tablet’s 7-inch IPS display has a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels and offers excellent viewing angles with great touch response. Unlike the Samsung devices, the Tegra Note does not use active digitizer technology (with pressure sensitive stylus). Instead it uses Nvidia’s DirectStylus technology which draws power from the Tegra 4 GPU to delivers similar performance. The display also has palm rejection — you can rest your palm on the display instead of keeping it in mid air.
You'll see the stylus silo on the side — when you pull the stylus out, the tablet detects removal and shows a dialogue box so that you can launch preloaded apps for writing or drawing. The bundled stylus works great and offers a unique chisel-like tip that can be used for all types of drawing.
The back panel is a mix of textured rubberized finish and matte plastic — the design provides a great grip and looks stylish. The only slight issue is that the power button is placed right next to the rear camera lens. The camera lens attracts a lot of smudges because of this.
Performance from the Tegra 4 processor is superb — it plays full HD videos out of the box and you get access to various Tegra optimised games from Tegra Zone — Nvidia's curated app store. The dual stereo speaker output is loud and clear for a small group.
Thanks to the low power fifth core, the Tegra Note gave us over 8 hours of battery backup. If you can spend a bit more and don’t want the stylus, you can also consider the Google Nexus 7.
