IT’S NOT A VACATION, BUT A ‘FITCATION’!
From
holiday boot camps to sand yoga drills and more, health-conscious folks are
increasingly taking fitness-centered vacations
The next time you want to get of town leave out the
touristy togs from your luggage, pack the shorts, keds and tracksuits and
get set to welcome a new you post the vacation. Say good bye to the ‘eat
all you can’ break that usually leaves you with an expanded waistline and
hello to the new trend of a get-fit holiday which offers a host of
fatburning and body-toning activities. “Active vacations are huge now with
more people shunning indulgent holidays in favour of this. The usual
holiday with rushed sightseeing and overeating leaves people stressed out.
The fitcation is a break from that; it’s a refocus on the self, a kind of
inward reflection really,” says wellness travel advisor, Mini Chandran.
WHAT’S THE ‘ACTION’ ITINERARY LIKE?
There’s plenty for this breed of travellers. There are daily exercise
sessions that focus on building the core and abs, body toning and
sculpting. Healthy vacation pursuits also come in the way of cycling treks,
mountain biking, hiking, rappelling, rock climbing, running trails in the
woods, Thai boxing, Zumba training, boot camps at a resort and more. “Yoga
holiday sessions are very much in demand too,” adds Mini, “Plus, cardio
workouts and art classes to release the creative muse. And since nature
plays a main role, you now have things like pilates by the water and
meditation under a banyan tree.”
HUGE HEALTH BENEFIT
More people are willing to invest holiday time on health,” says fitness
trainer Vinod Channa. “Fitcations are also budget-friendly as you can do so
many free hand workouts to lose weight; even a run works,” he adds. “This
kind of vacation can take the workout to a new level”, agrees celebrity
fitness trainer Deanne Panday. “It can charge you with a new resolution,
you return determined to continue the new regimen,” she says.
While you get in shape the diet has to go
hand-in-hand, so food plays a major role. “While the usual breaks have a
spread of oily, spicy and sweet fare, here the vacation diet trend is about
zero to minimum oil cooking with organic vegetables,” adds Mini.
