It’s been an uphill battle for LG smartphones. Despite several good devices over the years, Samsung has managed to carve out a substantial portion of the smartphone pie for itself leaving little room for other Android phones. Some may say that LG has always been a step behind, even citing similarities between the G2 and Samsung’s Galaxy S4.
But the truth is that the G2 is a beast of a smartphone: it has enough features to satisfy the über-geek, more power under the hood than most current smartphones, a great screen, high quality camera, a nice interface and several useful software enhancements. It seems like LG has pulled out all the stops with the G2 and it shows.
The most prominent feature of the G2 is the new button placement – there are no buttons on the sides like most smartphones — instead, power and volume rocker buttons are placed on the rear panel near the camera lens. LG says that they are placed in the most ideal place, right where your index finger rests while you hold the phone. The placement takes a while to get used to and while it is novel (and great for both left & right handed users), we think it’s not the game changer that LG claims it is. Battery life is another surprise with the G2 — it should easily last even heavy users a day and a half on a full charge.
In the end it all boils down to this — you want a powerful, but not too large Android smartphone with the best feature set — should you choose the Galaxy S4 or the G2? The S4 certainly has a lot going for it but the G2 is a very compelling alternative. The S4 wins the screen battle and there are a lot more accessories available for it — it’s comforting because millions of people already own and love it. The G2 wins hands down when it comes to performance and even manages to edge out the S4 camera (only slightly), thanks to the optical image stabilisation. You can't go wrong with either.
