display, no backlit keyboard
The Pavilion TouchSmart 11 from HP is one of the cheapest compact notebooks
with a touchscreen available today. The price includes full Windows 8 too.
It has an 11.6-inch touchscreen display with a resolution of 1366 x 768
pixels. Touch response is fantastic — coupled with the Windows 8 touch
optimised interface — it's easy to navigate the OS. However, viewing angles
are poor and the low brightness — even at 100% — is a letdown. If you don't
want to use touch, you can always use the trackpad and the great keyboard.
We would have loved the option of a backlit keyboard. At less than 1-inch
depth and 1.4kg weight, it is ultra slim and easy to carry. Despite the
slim size, you get a full size Ethernet port, two USB 3.0 ports, 1 USB 2.0
port, D-sub (VGA), HDMI as well as a multi card reader — the ports are
similar to most 13/14-inch notebooks. Build quality is impressive with a
silver finish on the top lid and a brushed metal finish on the palmrest.
Hardware includes a 1Ghz dual core AMD processor, 4GB RAM, Radeon HD 8250
graphics and a 500GB hard drive. Windows Experience Index gave it a score
of 3.9 with the lowest in graphics. For most basic usage scenarios —
document editing, browsing and multimedia playback — the notebook works
great. However, try to edit photographs in Adobe Photoshop/Lightroom or
music in Sony Sound Forge and the Pavilion becomes painfully slow. The
3-cell battery offers over 4 hours of battery life. Overall, the TouchSmart
11 is great value for money. If you prefer a hybrid device with a
detachable display, consider the Lenovo IdeaPad Lynx for 40,000.
