TECH REVIEW....... HP SlateBook x2

HP SlateBook x2

You may see a lot of convertible designs today – computing devices with detachable displays. But HP’s SlateBook x2 runs the popular Android operating system instead of the usual Windows. The form factor, keyboard and 10-inch screen will instantly remind you of the now defunct netbook. We feel that the best way to describe it then, is ‘an Android tablet disguised as a netbook’. It has an attractive matte pearl white finish that resists fingerprints. The display easily detaches from the dock with the flick of a switch. The dock itself has a nice, chiclet-style keyboard and a good trackpad.
There’s some serious muscle under the hood: a quad core Nvidia Tegra 4 processor. This means that it’s got serious chops as a gaming machine and you also get access to Tegra Zone, Nvidia’s curated guide to Tegra-optimised games. It’s also interesting to note that Tegra 4 supports 3D output. While the screen itself does not display 3D, you could connect it to a 3D-capable display/projector to enjoy 3D videos and games.
We liked that the tablet has a microSD slot for memory expansion plus a regular sized SD card slot in the dock. You can also plug in a USB drive (no converter needed) and copy-paste files with ease. The keyboard dock has an additional battery which keeps the tablet charged – only when the base battery runs down to 0% does the tablet battery begin to discharge. Combined, you should get about 9 hours of battery life
You’ll instantly see the Android advantage: the wealth of apps that you can get for it. Why Android? Any kind of document editing/ creation, web, music, HD movies and gaming are dispatched with ease. If this is what you’re going to use a small laptop for, you don’t need a full Windows PC.
SPECIFICATIONS 1.8Ghz quad core Tegra 4, 2GB RAM, 64GB storage (expandable), 10.1-inch full HD LCD, dual cameras, dual battery, 590g (tablet), 1.25kg (tablet + dock)
Well built, high-quality screen, excellent performance, keyboard dock included
HDMI & USB port only on dock, average quality cameras, bulky (laptop style) charger
