TECH REVIEW Dell Alienware 14
PRICE 1,14,000
While every other manufacturer is launching slimmer and lighter notebooks, Alienware is busy churning out big, bulky and overthe-top gaming machines — like this new Alienware 14.
Being a gaming oriented machine it comes with top-notch hardware. You get a 4th generation Intel Core i7 processor, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GT 765M graphics and 750GB harddrive. Together, these give you an impressive Windows Experience Index of 5.9 (lowest score to the HDD). We played Bioshock Infinte and Call of Duty: Black Ops among other games and the Alienware ran every game smoothly in full HD resolution. The downside is that it gets hot after just 15-20 minutes of gaming and the cooling fan makes a noise like a mini jet engine.
The 14-inch full HD display is sharp and thanks to the anti-glare panel, is great for playing games. The machine has a BluRay drive, three USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, displayport and Ethernet.
Dell has also revamped the entire design compared to the previous generations. The chassis is magnesium alloy with aluminum top lid instead of plastic. There are bright LED strips on the sides and lid, a backlit logo, backlit keyboard and for the first time — a backlit trackpad. You can customise all the LED backlighting using the preloaded software. Even the keyboard is divided into 5 zones and each zone can have a different backlight colour.
The integrated Klipsch speakers offer incredible sound — we expect nothing less from a gaming laptop. However, battery life is just over two hours with gaming and close to three hours with 'normal' use. If a gaming notebook is what you need and have the money to spare, there's not much else that can beat the Alienware 14.
SPECIFICATIONS Intel Core i7, 16GB RAM, Nvidia GT 765 graphics, 750GB HDD, 14-inch full HD display, three USB ports, HDMI, Displayport, Windows 7, 2.7kg
Amazing performance, audio output, gorgeous full HD display, customisable LED lighting
Bulky, steep price, disappointing battery life, loud cooling fan
