EDUCATION SPECIAL .....Sustainable education

Sustainable education

Wipro Ltd recently launched the third edition of the ‘Earthian’, an annual sustainability initiative for schools and colleges in India. The programme is designed to foster a sustainable way of thinking and acting in today’s youth.
All programme content will be made available in Hindi and English. Participants can submit their entries in both languages. Schools can participate in activities based on the central theme — water. These activities include studying the demand and usage of water, water trail,
and water quality. The second segment requires schools to submit essays on various topics including energy, agriculture and food, climate change, equity, biodiversity and historical trends in a national and global context. All participating institutes have access to an activity book. The book links the programme to academic curriculum and explains how teachers can get more involved in the process. Faculty involvement is imperative for participating schools and colleges.
Elaborating on the initiative, Anurag Behar, chief sustainability officer, Wipro Ltd said, “Earthian’s central vision mirrors what we think good education should achieve — to encourage critical, interdisciplinary and holistic thinking. The programme is designed to be a multifaceted, participatory experience beyond competition and awards. The third edition of earthian will involve a new format for schools to make it a rich learning experience. We continue to evolve the three-year engagement programme into one that integrates rich experiential learning in the core pedagogy academic institutions.”
30 institutes will be selected to participate in the three-year engagement programme that consists of workshops, talks and internships in the field of biodiversity and conservation, water management, alternative pedagogy, environmental measurement, etc. The winning institute will be presented a cash prize and certificates at the Wipro Earthian Annual Awards Forum to be held in 2014.
