Tips to master the handshake:
• Right hand: At meetings and networking events, keep your right hand ready for a handshake. Hold your folder/ drink in the left hand (as the condensation from a chilled drink can make your hands clammy).
• Body language: Handshakes create most impact when accompanied with direct eye contact and a smile. While shaking hands, never look over the person’s shoulder in a bid to spot a more important person. Shake from the elbow and pump the person’s hand 2-3 times.
• Present correctly: Keep your hand perpendicular when extending for a handshake; palm down can be viewed intimidating or aggressive while palm up is translated as subservient.
• Convey warmth: Extend a flat palm and connect with the other person’s web (skin between thumb and index finger).
Handshakes to avoid:
• Bone-crusher: This macho handshake is extra firm and displays physical power. It intimidates the other person and non-verbally conveys that you like to maintain a dominant position.
• Limp handshake: Commonly extended by women, this handshake conveys lack of self-esteem and confidence.
• Glove handshake: Common amongst political leaders, it involves covering the person’s hand with both your hands, subtly signaling “I’m there for you”. It is ideal for funerals and condolence meetings.
• Extended handshakes: Pumping the hand several times and refusing to let go – creates awkwardness.
