EUROPE ART SPECIAL.... All Europe is a Canvas

 All Europe is a Canvas

Europe is currently the cynosure of art lovers, with two widely different shows, the Documenta 14 in Kassel and Art Basel in Switzerland, drawing in the crowds.

Here's a look at some of the works that have caught the eyeballs:
Documenta 14: Over 160 artists present works in Kassel, Germany
On from June 10 to September 17
The Parthenon of Books
by Marta Minujin
The Argentinian artist's work is a full-scale replica of the temple on the Acropolis, but this one is made with about 1,00,000 copies of banned books that were donated by the public. It is erected at Friedrichsplatz where some 2,000 books were burned by the Nazis on May 19, 1933, in the so-called “Aktion wider den undeutschen Geist“ (Campaign against the Un-German Spirit)
When We Were Exhaling Images
by Hiwa K The Iraqi artist brings together pipes that contain beds, pillows, potted plants, books and lamps. It is the home and life of migrants
Installation
by Lala Rukh The Pakistani artist who is a founding member of the Women's Action Forum, which resisted curbing of women's rights, shows black-andwhite works that draw on calligraphy and musical patterns
Expiration Movement
by Daniel Knorr The Hungarian artist's work is located on top of the Zwehrenturm in Kassel. When the wind blows and billows the smoke upwards, it becomes a grim reminder of the chimneys of the Nazi camps. When the smokes flows downward, enveloping the building, it recalls a building that has gone up in flames. In 1941, the Fridericianum -which was used as a library -was bombed by Allies and a collection of 350,000 books was lost
Indian Presence at the Documenta
Amar Kanwar, Ganesh Haloi, Gauri Gill, Nilima Sheikh, Nikhil Chopra. For his work, Drawing a Line Through Landscape, Chopra travelled from Documenta Athens, the arm that opened for the first time in Greece this year, to Documenta Kassel. On the way, he pitched a tent and drew on it. The end of the 3,000 km road trip saw him unfolding a panorama of images that he had made on the way, reflecting migration
Art Basel

Wolfgang Tillmans
The Basel has a huge retrospective of the Ger man photog rapher's works, spanning his career from 1989 to 2017, from portraits to abstract works
