8 USEFUL TECH TIPS
The internet offers some easy
solutions to common consumer pain points.
Karan Bajaj & Hitesh Raj Bhagat round up some handy tips for
issues you'll face on a regular basis
Revoke Access to Old Apps
Most users that own a smartphone tend to install various apps.
However, as time passes by, some of these apps are just left unused or are
rarely used. When these apps are removed, one tends to forget to revoke access
given to these apps. Once a month, take out some time and revoke access given
to such apps. For Google, sign in to your account and head to Accounts >
Sign in & Security > Connected apps & sites > Manage apps. For
Facebook, go to Settings > Apps and you will see list of apps logged in via
Facebook -you can remove these one by one. In Twitter, head to Settings and
Privacy > Apps -you will see a list of apps connected with Twitter and you
revoke access to the ones you don't need. Similarly, for other services
(Microsoft, LinkedIn, Yahoo etc.) you can remove access from the Settings and
Security page of each website.
Add Subtitles to Movie Files
Unlike video files which are copyrighted, you can download
subtitle files freely. They are often available in multiple languages and from
different sources (quality can vary). Just search for movie name subtitles to
download the SRT file -most websites where the subtitles are hosted will have
ratings for the subtitles, so make sure to get one with good ratings. Once you
download the subtitle SRT file, rename it to the same file name as your video
file. Now when you play the video, the subtitles will automatically appear if
they are enabled. At times, you might also notice that the subtitles don't sync
too well with the actual speech-for this issue we recommend that you use VLC
Media Player because it gives you option to adjust the subtitle sync speed
& appearance. Keep in mind, that you should do this only for movies (DVDs
Blu-Rays) that you own.
Deleting Old Online Account
It takes just a minute to sign up for a service or website.
However, did you ever make that Twitch, Tumblr and Scribd account, only to
realize that you'll never use it? If you want to delete such accounts that you
don't use (and never plan to use), head to http:www. accountkiller.com. It will
take you through a step-by-step process of how to delete almost any online
account. They also classify different websites into a whitelist, grey list and
black list. The white list sites over very easy deletion of account, the grey
ones will make you jump through few hoops while the black list sites make it
very difficult (often requiring you to send multiple emails -for which
AccountKiller will happily provide the relevant email IDs).
How to Unsubscribe in Bulk
Most of the times we don't realize while signing up for a
website or service that they might also automatically sign you up for their
newsletter service. Even if you stop using the service, you will continue to
receive irritating newsletters that clog your email. To get rid of unwanted newsletters,
head to http:www.unroll.me and sign-in with your email account. The service
will then scan your inbox for subscription services it can find. You'll get an
alphabetical list view of all your subscribed serves for easy navigation. Just
press the unsubscribe button in front of the service name and you will be
automatically removed from the subscription in an instant.
Avoid Sharing Computers
Don't like other people using your computer when you are away
but cannot put a password? Open http:www.fakeupdate.net in your browser and it
will show you 9 themes to choose from. The themes are animated webpa g e s for
Windows, Mac, Linux , SteamOS and so on. Each theme shows a totally
real-looking animated loading screen for each respective OS.When you make your
browser window full screen, it will appear as if your computer is loading the
OS or installing updates -anyone who sees this will not bother with your
computer as it will seem unusable till updates are installed.
Sidestep Those Deadlines
Stuck with a deadline and are running late? What if you actually
submit the work to your boss but the file becomes corrupt and unrecoverable?
Using https:corrupt-a-file.net you can upload any file (just put
a name and some random text in it) and the service will corrupt it to a point
that it becomes unrecoverable. A corrupt file is obviously not your fault
right?
This way you get a good excuse and some extra time to work on
really finishing what you're supposed to do.Just don't use it too often!
Unlocking PDF Files
The whole reason why PDF files are widely used to share
documents is because changes can be locked. At times, you might need to remove
the security lock from your PDF for other users to access. Head to
http:www.pdfunlock.com and upload your file -it will ask for the unlock
password once for the file. After that, it will let you download the unlocked
file back to your computer. Note that this will not remove or allow you to
access a password protected PDF. You will still need the password to open the
file but once open, it can be easily unlocked and modified.
Free Games
Many organisations don't let users install apps or games on work
computers. But if you need a little gaming downtime, you can play flash based
games that run directly in the browser and don't require installation. Head to
http:www.miniclip.com, http:www.playfg.com or http:www.addictinggames.com -all
of these lets you play within your browser or download simple flash games that
don't need to be installed. Do keep in mind that you will need to have the
latest version of Adobe flash installed on the computer
