5 WAYS TO Earn Your Manager's Respect
An employee-manager dynamic
can be happier and more productive when both respect each other. Simple things
like finding out your manager's work style and adapting to it, demonstrating
initiative and having regular feedback conversations can put you in your
manager's good books and ensure heshe respects you as an employee. Brinda
Dasgupta brings you suggestions from the experts on how you can go about it.
1 Suit
Your Manager's Work Style
Work towards matching your
day-to-day function ing to suit your manager. “Figuring out whether your
manager likes to communicate through emails, whether heshe wants to be updated
even about the smallest details or only about the important as pects of a task,
can be helpful. Engage in regular conversations to determine his/her
preferences and operate appropriately,“ said Pankaj Khanna, vice-president of
talent acquisition at Mindtree.
2 Get Peer Support
It will be hard for your
manager to not acknowl edge your capability if you have the respect of your
peers. “Work on becoming the most valuable person within the team by
collaborating and part nering with peers on their projects,“ said Khanna.
3 Don't Give Excuses
If you have underperformed
on a deliverable or failed at an allocated task, do not give excuses.
“Owning up to where you
have gone wrong and promising to do better next time is a great way to earn
your manager's respect. It shows your maturi ty and willingness to pick
yourself up from failure,“ said Sandeep Kohli, national director of HR at EY.
4 Be More Proactive
Proactively taking
initiatives where one finds scope for growth or improvements is crucial. “It is
also a good idea to have rapidly changing goals.
Your success within the
team greatly depends on how proactively you engage with your manager to get
visibility and alignment to the changing goals of the organisation,“ said
Prashant Parmar, senior di rector of enterprise business and HR at Simplilearn.
5 Make Your Manager Successful
While it is important to
know your own KRAs and deliver on them, it is equally important to have a basic
idea of your manager's KRAs as well. “This will help you know what you can do
to push your manager towards success, which will ensure he she appreciates your
efforts,“ said Kohli
