TOP INDIAN RIVER CRUISES
GANGA RIVER CRUISE BRAHMAPUTRA CRUISE NARMADA DAY CRUISE YANAM RIVER CRUISE KERALA BACKWATER CRUISES GODAVARI RIVER LAUNCH
Wake up to the sound of birds, the splash of oars cutting through water and the smell of rural India and its natural greenery when you go on an Indian River Cruise.
While boat rides and day cruises have been a popular hit with the tourist masses, overnight sailing trips are more for the niche traveller looking to explore the river belts in a ‘one of a kind’ way.
In the North, Ganga and its tributaries offer a range of landscapes from the mountains in the distance; the Gangetic plains and the religious ghats of Benaras to the colonial buildings alongside the Hoogly (Ganga in Bengal) in Kokata.
To the east, the Bramaputra makes its way through Assam from where cruises are hosted. These liners offer guests the luxury of a quality resort as they make their way through wildlife reserves.
IN Madhya Pradesh, the Narmada cruises treat you to central Indian heritage while down south, the Godavari showcases the temple culture that is prominent along its banks. Kerala's backwater cruises are a marvel of their own. Enjoy as time slows down for you to enjoy the state's rural settings. Onboard and off, cruise packages offer enough to keep you entertained through your holiday. Book yourself a trip soon and experience a new side of India.
GANGA/HOOGLY RIVER CRUISE
ROUTE: Bengal tour
The Ganga may be causing a lot of trouble in Uttarakhand
but in Bengal she’s playing nice. So why not try a river cruise between Farraka
and Kolkata in Bengal? Cruise companies offer a mix of water and land based
travel through which they showcase the heritage monuments unique to North
India. Travel past colonial structures from the time of the East India Company
like Writer’s Building, The General Post Office, The High court, The Town Hall,
Council House and Treasury Building. Also visit the Dalhousie Square and then
drive past St John’s Church and Victoria Memorial in Kolkata. In Kalna, take a
tour of the
Rajbari complex of temples. Cruise past the religious town of Mayapur, quintessentially a temple town known for being the headquarters of the Krishna Consciousness Movement, better known as ISKON. Visit artisan villages along the banks of the river in Matiari and in Murshidabad visit the Hazarduari Palace with its many false and secret doors.
KERALA BACKWATER CRUISE
ROUTE: Allepey to Cochin
The best way to explore the backwaters of Kerala is by boat; and the best boat to travel by would be the traditional houseboats known as kettuvallam. While these boats were primarily used to transport cargo, today, with additions like air conditioning, onboard kitchen facilities and double storied accomodation, they are used mainly for tourism. Sail through the backwater network of canals, rivers and lakes. Visit Allepey, Vembanad Lake and the famous Kumarakam Bird Sanctuary. If you are interested in birding, then this is the place to be. Herons, ducks, kingfishers and gulls are easy to spot as they hunt for fish. Stop by choir villages, ancient houses and temples in Chavara. The locals are friendly and eager to share their culture. The bustling port city of Cochin offers a juxtaposition of old and new. Cochin Fort and a number of Dutch colonial structures still hold prominent place in the local landscape. All along, expect to enjoy the tranquillity of the backwaters. Dine on the local fare or have the boat service cook fresh fish and vegetable dishes the way you want. Today, many of the kettuvallam have television connections. However, we reccomend that you skip cable inorder to enjoy the rural experience better. Some cruise companies offer a mix package of road and boat tours.
SUNDERBAN AND BRAHMAPUTRA CRUISES
SUNDERBAN ROUTE: Kolkata to Gadkhali Jetty in Sunderbans
Sunderban, the home to the Royal Bengal Tigers is also the largest contiguous mangrove area in the world. A tour takes from the ghats of Kokata to the interiors of the Tiger reserve. Stop by a fisherman’s cove in Namkhana, spot crocodiles in Bhagabatpur or go on a sacred pilgrimage to the 300 year old temple in Netidhopani. Waiting to spot those stripped cats? Sudhanyakhali’s tiger spotting tower is one of the best and safest places to do so.
