FOOD SPECIAL ...........................Chip in With a New Set

Chip in With a New Set

Potato chips are passé. Chip-hungry snackers are getting smarter about their choices and have discovered that baking is the way to go. Start with egg whites, chickpeas, and even fruit to enjoy a guilt-free snack:

Apple
Just bake thin slices, flip them halfway and dry them in the oven. All fruit, all goodness. If stored in airtight containers, the chips last for a week.

Kale
A favourite with vegans, kale chips are easy to bake after the leaves have been dried. One cup of fresh kale contains just 34 calories.

Soy
Rich in protein, iron and fibres, and low in fat, soy chips are high on the list of those who want to drop several pounds in a jiffy

Egg White
Made with egg whites and spices, these puffed chips contain protein and need only heat and a little water to form a low-calorie snack.

Turnip
Turnips taste bland but they are rich in vitamin C. Bake the root and add salt to taste.

Beetroot
Beets are an excellent source of vitamin B, antioxidants and potassium. Cut very thin slices and bake them with a little coconut oil.

Yuca Root
Also known as cassava, the root of this plant contains high levels of a phyto-compound, called saponins, which act as a natural steroid

Hummus
Chickpeas contain iron and manganese that keep energy levels up and our blood healthy. Bake your chips with garlic for flavour and to fight infections.
