FOOD SPECIAL... NET GAIN

NET GAIN

Sites, video channels and people who will help you get your sugar fix

The Sweet Spots
For those of us with a sweet tooth and an adventurous spirit in the kitchen, there can be nothing better than cooking up a sugary treat. And hey, with the vacations around the corner, these web resources can earn moms and dads some brownie points with the kids too.
>> Passionate About Baking
Gurgaon-based Deeba Rajpal is a prolific blogger with a penchant for photography and desserts. The combination yields some mouth-watering recipes, complete with photos, on her site. Cakes might dominate her blog, but it also includes cookies, frozen desserts and macarons. What’s wonderful is that each recipe is written as a personal journey — what inspired her, how she went about preparing it, and some tips along the way. What we also like is that the recipe itself is more descriptive than the usual ‘bake for 30 minutes’.

>> Purple Foodie
Shaheen Peerbhai has been chronicling her exploits in the kitchen since 2007 under the moniker ‘Purple Foodie’. The certified pastry chef from Mumbai has a huge list of recipes to satiate your sugar cravings, each written from an Indian perspective. She is very aware of the ingredients available easily in the country and also has several write-ups on how to make your own, cheaper versions of expensive items, such as mascarpone cheese. Besides, her ‘Baking Essentials’ and ‘Measurement Guide’ will come in handy for anyone who’s new to cooking.

>> Chocolate Covered Katie
Just because you have a sweet craving doesn’t mean it has to start inflating your waistline. Chocolate Covered Katie is a treasure trove of healthy versions of all your favourite desserts. Katie is vegan and so most of her recipes will work for any vegetarian as well as Jains. Each dish also comes with nutritional facts. She writes, “My aim isn’t for people to say, ‘This is good… for a healthy dessert.’ I want them to say, ‘This is good. Period.’”

>> Joy of Baking
Most home-cooks who love their dessert swear by Joy of Baking. The website is quite a treat, but what’s particularly good is their YouTube channel, which plays hosts to several detailed baking videos. It’s always better to see a dish being made than to just read about it. “To become a good baker all you need are good ingredients and some time and patience in the kitchen,” says founder Stephanie Jaworski; but a little guidance from her also goes a long way.

>> Baking Buyer
The Baking Buyer channel is a bit more professional than just for home chefs, but the amount you’ll learn from it is amazing. Think of it this way: it’s a bit like what you gain while watching Top Chef and its professional chefs as opposed to the advice given to the home cooks on Masterchef. And yes, of all the YouTube channels featured in this write-up, Baking Buyer is the one that is updated most frequently.

>> Baking With Rose
Learn from award-winning American baker and cookbook author Rose Levy Barenbaum as she presents her craft in a series of videos on YouTube. The channel isn’t updated any more, but the archives are a great resource for bakers. Of special note is the ‘Baking Magic Tips’ series, which touches upon common tasks like perfectly whipped cream, mixing techniques, etc. And Barenbaum has a homely — almost motherly — way of taking you through each recipe.
