PERSUASIVE TACTICS
1 RECIPROCITY
Use Robert Cialdini’s principles of persuasion to
play positive politics at the workplace. Know that people like to reciprocate
favours. Deliberately go out of your way to help others without an immediate
agenda. The colleague you helped complete a project after office hours will
defend you in your absence and recommend you for a key opportunity.
2 AUTHORITY
People tend to obey authority figures or colleagues
respected for their expertise. Get your ideas voiced or proposed by the team
leader instead of you. Work in projects that take you to the corporate office
or those involving your CXO. Your proximity to authority and their weight
behind your project will work wonders.
3 LIKING
You can persuade people more easily if they like you.
Avoid being shot down because you are disliked for your tendency to get
personal or abusive. Do not gossip or speak ill of others because such things
invariably reach the person concerned. Do not take sides in arguments since
people remember how you made them feel bad.
4 SOCIAL PROOF
People do things that others are doing. So, follow
normal social behavior at work to be one of them thus increasing your
influence. Get a troublemaker to follow your lead by first persuading followers
and neutral colleagues. Do not attach meaning to workplace rituals. Your job
gives you identity and is not meant to be your emotional anchor.
5 COMMITMENT AND CONSISTENCY
When people commit verbally or in writing, they tend
to honour it to be consistent with their self-image. Get verbal approvals for
your views in the early stages with both colleagues and bosses. When it is time
to act, their support will be available. Once you trigger small actions of
support, larger requests will be granted faster.
