GADGET GIZMO REVIEW
Gionee Marathon M5
The
Marathon series of smartphones from Gionee are known for their excellent
battery life. The latest in the range is the Marathon M5 and it houses a
massive 6,020mAh battery -the largest battery currently available on a
smartphone to our knowledge.
Because
of the large battery, the M5 is a bulky phone -and it weighs a substantial
211 grams. However, Gionee has managed to keep the device 8.6mm thick which
is impressive. The unibody metal design gives it a premium look and provides
good grip. You also get a gorgeous 5.5-inch amoled display with excellent
sunlight readability, vivid colours and good brightness levels.Apart from the
metal bezel, there is a thick black bezel around the the display which is a
let-down. Also, we wish that the menu buttons under the screen were backlit.
We
kept the phone constantly connected to 3GWiFi, with two email accounts, three
social networks, music, video and camera. The M5 delivered between two and
three days of battery life on a regular basis. Note that this was without
turning on the builtin intelligent power saving mode. With the power saving
mode on, battery life will typically extend by another half day.
Performance
is also equally impressive. The 3GB RAM combined with quad core processor has
no issues running any games and even full HD videos. The 32GB internal storage
is a welcome change because you get about 26GB free for use.
Camera
performance is a mixed bag on the M5. While the focus and capture speed are
impressive, we found the images to lacking detail. This issue was with both
the rear and front camera. The good thing is that you get multiple shoot
modes (including a manual mode for additional control).
The
Marathon M5 is an impressive phone overall, but it faces stiff competition
from the Lenovo Vibe P1 when it comes to price. The Vibe P1 offers a full HD
display, an octa core processor and better cameras along with a 5,000mAh
battery for `15,999.
