STUCK IN THE
WRONG JOB?
If every
day at your workplace is becoming a drag for you and you
feel no excitement
about the job, then you are probably stuck in
the wrong job.
So, do you move out or stay back?
Have you been dreading
going to work each day? Have you been dragging
yourself through all
your daily tasks at work?
Are weekends the only thing you look forward to? Is this the job you always
wanted or are you stuck
in the wrong job?
Many a times, when we take up a job, it seems like a dream come true.
But then, slowly and
steadily , reality sets in and you realise this wasn't
what you had ever wanted
to do. It is true that not all of us can be in the
perfect job, but then no
individual should have to spend mos should have
to spend most of hisher
working life doing something that they don't like
and that makes them miserable.
So, what are the
tell-tale signs? Anupam Jauhari, vice president and global
head, HR, Infogain,
avers that we get many hints when we are in the wrong
job, but it is up to us
whether we recognise them or not. “If one is
consistently getting
poor feedback, it is time for a change. If your work life
has more negative
comments and few rewards, it's probably not because
the world is out to get
you. You are just in the wrong job. Another hint is
that if your skills and
interests don't match your job specifications or the
position you are working
on, then it's not your cup of tea.“
Is it the salary that is
not up to expectation, is it the job role or is it the work
environment what brings an employee to this
stage? According to Ashu
Malhotra, HR head, jabong.com, “You are
stuck in the wrong job when
it becomes very taxing
and difficult to even to do the normal routine jobs.
The job is not
challenging enough and they may feel that they are
underutilised and not
getting a chance to prove their mettle.“
Similarly , Tanvi
Saxena, head human resources, CapitalVia Global Research
Limited, informs that when your performance
expectations are not met by
what is desired by the
company , then probably it is not the right job.
“When you are in office and not enthusiastic
about the assigned tasks,
responsibilities or not
willing to work, then probably it is not the right job
for you. Also, when your individual goals
are not aligned with your
company's goals, then
you are in the wrong place,“ she adds.
Once the realisation of
being stuck in the wrong job has struck, it is upon
the individual to take
the right steps to ensure the wrong job becomes the
right one. Or whether it is time to move on
or stay there.Jauhari suggests,
“Realise your strengths and come up with one
single aspect of your work
that you enjoy and focus
on that. Speak to your supervisor and peers for
improvement areas. When you feel so detached
from your work, you need
to create a serious
beginner's mindset to shift gears and put yourself in a
steep learning mode.See
if you can move around to a new project or team.
Meet positive people who
can be your new influencers.“
The difficult part is to
stay back with the initial struggles, whereas it is
always easy to walk
away, asserts Saxena adding, “Hence, it is highly
recommended that one
should initially stick with the plan and try to
work and put in all his efforts
in the right direction patiently.
Give at least 6-7 months
to a job to completely understand the actual
scenario and, hence,
take a better decision.“
So, if you are feeling
stuck and detached at work, try to shift gears and
get back the excitement. If that still
doesn't help, then you are the best
person to decide the
next step!
