THE MILK QUESTION
Once almost universally lauded as a nutrition powerhouse, dairy is now a subject of controversy
MOST
OF us grew up being pressurised by our mothers to drink our daily
glass of milk because “It’s good for you.” But over the years,
research has revealed that it may not be quite as healthy as we
believe.
Here
is my list of the pros and cons of dairy.
WHY
DRINK IT
Milk
is a natural source of calcium, magnesium, protein and energy. It is
easily available and can also be consumed in several delicious
forms, such as shakes, ice-creams, paneer, yoghurt, curd and cheese.
Low
fat or skimmed milk, which retains its calcium, but contains reduced
fat, effectively moderates blood pressure. Because milk is filling,
patients with high blood pressure can use it as a substitute for
unhealthy snacks like biscuits and fried foods.
Milk
is a reliable source of calcium, which is good for bone health,
especially among growing children and ageing elders. Calcium
requirements also increase after menopause.
Milk
from cows raised in a free state without hormones and other
chemicals, and fed on natural grass is usually of a higher quality.
It is rich in beta carotene, antioxidants and vitamin E.
WHY
AVOID IT
Many
children and adults dislike its taste and complain of gas and
bloating after drinking milk. This discomfort could be due to lactose
intolerance.
Drinking
milk can lead to an increase in phlegm and other sinus and
respiratory problems, particularly among asthmatics.
