TRAVEL SPECIAL........ WEEKEND GETAWAY IN INDIA

 WEEKEND GETAWAY IN INDIA

FROM MUMBAI: ELEPHANTA
Mumbai dwellers Emili, Saranya and Joycelin recently took a short break to visit Elephanta Caves. Emili says: We reached Gateway of India at 10 am and bought ferry ride return tickets for ` 250 from Bhau cha Dhakka.
The boat journey to Elephanta Island brought along strong sea breeze and many seagulls for company. We took the toy train to the foot of the island just for fun. After crossing the stony stairs we reached the caves. History an ..
History and nature is preserved well in the caves.

The first cave is the most majestic one, which houses the three headed sculpture of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh. Post lunch, we saw the two canons and bunkers used by soldiers many years ago. After clicking pictures, we made our way back to the jetty as the last boat was at 5 pm. Snacking and chatting, we returned to Mumbai happily.
FROM BANGALORE: DANDELI, KARNATAKA

Located along the banks of the Kali River with the Western Ghats as a backdrop, Dandeli is surrounded by dense deciduous forests. Renowned as a natural habitat for wildlife, a holiday here is recommended by ET-Travel reader Anju Thambi. Take your family along on open jeep safaris that are organised inside the Dandeli wildlife sanctuary.

You will be accompanied by trained naturalists, who guide you to view and understand the rich wildlife here. It is home to big cats such as tigers, leopards, and even black panthers, elephants, gaur, deer, antelopes, many kinds of reptiles and a rich variety of birds. It is also a perfect place for white water rafting.

Dandeli is surrounded by natural, historic and religious spots in the form of River Kali, Kavla Caves, Syntheri Rocks, Ulavi Temple, Sykes Point, the Supa Dam (hydro-electric power station). Thanks to growing interest amidst city dwellers to enjoy nature's best, Dandeli is now home to many good jungle resorts and camps. You can sign up for a nature camp and have a great time with your friends.

FROM DELHI: KALPA, HIMACHAL PRADESH

Welcome to the land of juiciest apples — Kalpa in Himachal Pradesh. ET-Travel reader Krishnan N truly liked taking a holiday in the misty valleys and hills of Kalpa. This is a town with a history of ancient temples. The Sutlej River meanders through deep gorges and thewinding mountain road is bordered by Chilgoza forests.

The serenity of this sleepy hamlet was not often visited byforeigners until recently, but there are still relatively few visitors. There are few places to stay in Kalpa and more, below, in Reckong Peo where travellers must stop to get their 'inner line' permits to continue upwards to the Spiti Valley.
If you are a photography enthusiast then this is your chance to get started with landscapes and sceneries. The view from Kalpa is so breathtakingly beautiful that you may start to get the feel that you are perched in the lap of the mountains with the entire range of peaks being visible.

You can also view the sacred Shivling Rock on the Kailash mountain that changes its colour at different points in the day. Carry a warm jacket here to keep the chilly mountain winds at bay.
