life, camera Chunky design, 1:1 aspect ratio not ideal for watching videos,
steep price
Just 6 months into the launch of BlackBerry 10, we finally have a cheaper
device on the new OS — the BlackBerry Q5.
Thanks to the unibody design, the Q5 feels solid, but the all-plastic body
spoils it a little. The rounded edges and sides provide a great grip —
fantastic for onehanded use. Many people also commented that the Q5 felt
'chunky' when compared to the slim smartphones in the same price range.
The 3.1-inch touchscreen offers excellent touch response — useful to work with
the various BB10 gestures. However, the 1:1 screen aspect ratio is not so good
if you like to watch videos.
The four row QWERTY keypad has isolated keys which are easier & faster to
type on. The hard plastic keys feel similar to those on the Curve 9220. It's
fairly likely that that users upgrading from a BlackBerry Bold might not like
this keypad.
Hardware includes a 1.2Ghz dual core Qualcomm S4 processor, 2GB RAM and 8GB
storage that can be expanded with microSD card. In terms of performance, there
was not much difference between the Q10 and Q5 in day-to-day usage. We did
notice slight sluggishness in navigation at times though. The 5MP camera takes
above average pictures and does full HD video recording with good quality.
Battery life is impressive — we got over a day’s usage with average use. The Q5
has its share of quirks including the steep price, but for loyal BlackBerry
users disappointed by the Q10’s price, the Q5 offers a solution. If its just a
touch & type experience you want, consider the Bold 9790.
