These techies got tired of milk vendors cheating them

THE IDEA:
Use
technology to supply fresh, unadulterated milk
EUREKA MOMENT:
After
graduating from IIT-Bombay in 2005, Abhijeet Kumar and Munendra Singh moved to
Pune for work. There was a bit of a furore in their neighbourhood one day,
after a milk vendor ran away when residents questioned him about the odd taste
of the milk. They learnt that the vendor had been adulterating the milk as the
delivery costs were high and margins low. They decided to use technology to
work out a way to supply unadulterated milk to homes.
EARLY DAYS:
They
studied milk supply chain and delivery systems and optimised every step with
technology. The company sources milk from plants of various brands, tracks the
packets at every stage, and delivers every morning. The startup team has
brought the entire order process for a boring daily chore on to a single app.
BIGGEST CHALLENGE:
“Delivering to thousands of households within a
strict time window required a robust system which took a lot of effort to
build,” says Kumar.
WHERE WE ARE NOW:
RainCan serves 10,000 homes in Pune daily and has an
annual run rate of $2 million. The 70-member team aims to reach 1 lakh homes.
RainCan has raised $800,000 from angel investors.
