MANAGEMENT SPECIAL...................... R GOPALAKRISHNAN

R GOPALAKRISHNAN

During his days in Hindustan Unilever, R Gopalakrishnan was a regular speaker at the company’s training centre and that’s where the love for sharing experiences was born. “It’s the speaking that led to the writing,” he says. “I wrote management books because that was all I knew." While he’s a full-time director at Tata Sons, Gopalakrishnan manages to carve out enough time for his first love, speaking. In India, he’s a regular at b-schools as well as lectures organised by professional bodies like the CII or AIMA, as well as the Tata Management and Training Centre. Gopalakrishnan believes people reading books by professional managers don’t expect research but experiences and a practical perspective. The idea is to leave the reader with stories, and not a check list of the top five things he should to do become an effective manager. “You have to touch the brain of the reader such that it activates something which will be useful later….not instructions but an inductive idea,” he says.
