What makes the best ebook reader better? That’s a question that Amazon is trying to address with the second generation Kindle Paperwhite. The original upturned a lot of pre-conceived notions about ebook readers — the innovative touch-based control system made the whole device lighter and easier to operate while the built in light made reading easy in any scenario. Like with any Kindle, you can buy books and have them in seconds. You can transfer ebook, DOC, JPEG and PDF files to your device using email — with the unique ‘@kindle.com’ email ID that’s assigned to every Kindle device. Every purchase you make on the Amazon store is securely stored in the cloud, yours to download whenever you need it and on every Kindle device (or Kindle app) registered with your ID. This improved version of the Paperwhite is identical to the first generation but features a number of improvements under the hood. For starters, it has a whiter screen which delivers higher contrast. The processor has been upgraded to allow for faster page turns and refreshes for an overall better experience. The capacitive touch technology is more responsive than before and even the built in light seems better, without any bright spots toward the edges of the screen. Improvements to software include Smart Lookup (better dictionary), vocabulary builder, PageFlip (scan through a book without losing your place in it) and FreeTime (a dedicated section for your kids, where you can curate books and keep track of their reading skills). To conclude, any book lover will tell you that there’s no replacement for the feel (and sometimes the smell) of a book. But the Kindle Paperwhite makes it so easy to get new books plus carry hundreds of them with you, that it really is a no-brainer. For the dyed-in-the-wool book lover then, there is no better device.
