HOME SPECIAL....Turn the Wall into Your Canvas

Turn the Wall into Your Canvas

There are numerous options to make your boring walls come alive with not just designer paints, but also wallpaper, textures, tiles and unique elements like metal and glass

Walls are not just utilitarian anymore. They now play a very important role in home decor. While a stunning wall design can create magic in your home, an overdone piece of artwork on the wall can give it a jarring look. You should, therefore, keep the size of the room as well as the furniture and furnishings in mind before choosing your wall design. Rahul Sunder, founder of wall decal maker Sunderella, says multiple wall coverings, such as textured in one room and wallpapers in another, work well in larger homes. But in smaller apartments, it is best to focus on a single accent or focus wall. Here are some ways to give your walls an elegant and attractive look:

Wallpaper Magic
Wallpapers are available in a host of patterns and hues these days, and like decals, can be cleaned easily as well. Embossed, printed, metallic, satin — the list just goes on. If you want that hint of richness and grandeur in the room, opt for a satin finish. For a more formal look, choose a paper in light background like cream with grey or gold motifs, depending on the kind of mood you want to create. For some fun, you can even opt for a 3D look like a path into a dark forest, providing unrivalled depth to the room. Textured and embossed wallpapers in symmetric prints and patterns also look great.

Fun with Decals
This is the easiest way to refurbish a boring wall. Decals are vinyl stickers and can range from a small sticker like a hanging lamp to a more complex mural that covers most of your wall. While choosing the decal, keep the wall colour in mind and go for a decal in a complementing darker tone or in a contrasting shade. For kids’ rooms, you can create an underwater scene with playful dolphins and colourful corals. For the living room, the decal can be as simple as a few flowers strewn over the wall, a single tree in a corner, or as complex as a cityscape complete with skyscrapers.

Say it With Tiles
Tiles are not just for bathrooms and kitchens. With designer tiles available in a variety of matt and lustre finishes, tiles can give an elegant look to living spaces too. Rough-hewn stone finish tiles remain ever popular and are ideal for a focus wall in the living room, or near the staircase and the end of a corridor. Graphic tiles can break the monotony of a single wall colour. You may even put up mosaics to bring a Moroccan Riad feel to your home.

Add Some Texture
Paint textures are all the rage now, but swirls and granulated looks are not the only options available. You can go for a metallic finish, and not just in golds and silvers, but even shades like purple. You can also get embossed textures in a series of circles or creepers all across the wall. While choosing the paint for the texture, opt for a shade much deeper than the rest of the walls. This will give symmetry to your room and home.

For a Unique Look
If you really want to make your home stand out, you have some unique options. A lacquered glass finish to a wall can make a room dazzle, quite literally. With an entire wall in a deep red or lime green glass lacquer, you don’t need any other artwork in the room. You can also get a steel wall covering. Since installing this will need specialised skills, you can opt for tiles or wallpapers with a metal finish. You can even choose a wallpaper with leather finish.
