Your
Cozy Reading Nook
The
joy of reading can go up manifold if you have a reading nook that is pretty and
comfortable. Here are simple tips to
create five space-saving nooks to curl up with a book.
Whether you are a techsavvy ebook reader or just love reading the old-fashioned way, curling up with a great book is one of the best escapes from hectic modernday life. Just about any chair, couch or bed would do, but why not do it in a bit more style, in a comfortable corner set aside just for reading? And you don’t need an entire room for this. Read on:
The Comfy Corner
This is the most basic of them all. Walk through your apartment and look for forlorn, unused corners. If you find one near a window, even better. Anchor the chosen spot with a rug in your favourite traditional or geometric pattern, place a stuffed armchair against the wall without the window, and use an ottoman or a pouf for a footrest. Choose chairs and foot-stools in bright solids or stripes that match the rug. Throw in a couple of back cushions and a light blanket onto the arm-chair. Place a tall floor lamp, a lush flower pot on the window ledge, and a small side table for your books to complete the look.

The Hidden Nook
This one is for those with lots of in-built wardrobe space. Remove the shelves in a closet you can spare and place a mattress and some cushions at the base. Leave a reasonable area above the seating space free of any shelves; put up shelves on the three walls above this free space to create a bookcase. Use an overhead mini-chandelier and hook up a wall lamp closer to the seating space. If the reading nook is meant for children, you can create a bunk instead of shelves on the top half.

The Tent House
The kids will love this. You can use an actual small camping tent or build your own triangular cloth tent with wooden frame. If you are making a triangular tent, place the back against the wall so your kid has something to lean against, and use floral or pastel cloth to make it attractive. Place it at a spot where there is ample natural light. Throw in a couple of seat cushions and a basket to hold books and the nook is ready. Drape a string of fairy lights over it, and your child will soon want to sleep in it too.

Under-the-Stairs
The space below a staircase can be a good reading spot. Paint it in ivory white or lighter shades of blue, pink, yellow or green. Put a bench or a solid board, and turn the space beneath it into a cupboard for books and magazines. Or leave the space open and put your books in colourful bamboo baskets under the bench. Place a mattress, pillows and cushions to make the space comfy. Put an overhead cone lamp or, if possible, put concealed lights underneath the stairs.

The Outdoors
Reading in the lap of nature can make it even more enjoyable. All you need is a nice little balcony or verandah that does not get too hot or sunny during the day. Seating options are many, and depending on space, you can go for a rug and a large floor cushion, a cane swing, a planter’s chair, a hammock or even a small round bed. Place it at the far end parallel to the main railing. Create a partial trellis screen on which creepers can be mounted to provide you some privacy. In the corner next to you, place small flower pots in a circle with a small water element in their midst. Happy Reading!
