One of the slimmest budget tablets around, Zen's Ultratab runs stock Android 4.0 on a 1.2Ghz processor with 512MB RAM, has 4GB storage, USB onthe-go and a 1.3MP front camera.  
PROS Slim design, sturdy build quality, loud output from speaker, bright display with a matte finish, 4 hour battery life  
CONS
No HDMI port, poor camera, small icons make navigation harder, poor viewing angles on the display


HCL ME U1

Clad in all white, HCL's U1 tablet has various preloaded apps catered for educational purposes. It runs a 1Ghz processor with 512MB RAM, 4GB storage and has a full size USB port.  
PROS Premium design, full size USB port, screen has the best viewing angles in this group, multiple preloaded apps  
CONS
No HDMI out port, sluggish performance, 3 hour battery, poor camera, no access to Google play store for apps, high price


Karbonn Smart Tab 1

This one attracts admiring glances thanks to a premium design. It runs on a 1.2Ghz processor with 512MB RAM and has 4GB storage. It also has HDMI, 2MP camera and a customised Android user interface. PROS Top notch build quality, large icons and customised lock screen, over 6 hours of battery backup, USB on-the-go support  
CONS
Glossy display is hard to read in sunlight, mediocre camera performance, low output from loudspeaker


Micromax Funbook

The Funbook runs a slightly customized version of Android 4.0 with a 1.2Ghz processor, 512MB RAM and 4GB storage. It has HDMI as well as USB on-the-go support. PROS USB host port (adapter) is included, huge selection of preloaded apps, excellent video playback performance, dedicated hardware buttons make it easy to use CONS
All-plastic body, weak sound output from speaker, screen has poor viewing angles, poor camera, 3 hour battery, touchscreen stops responding while charging


Funtab Fit

This is the first 'health tablet' — it has various health-related apps preloaded. The interface is comfortable (large icons) and it is powered by a 1Ghz processor & 512MB RAM with 4GB storage.  
PROS Nice price, various health and education apps preloaded, large icons, USB on-the-go support, HDMI output  
CONS
Suspect build quality, glossy rear panel, sluggish performance, just 2 hours of battery life, no USB on-the-go adapter provided in the box


Zync Z990+

Zync's Z990+ has the strongest hardware of the lot — 1.5Ghz processor, 1GB RAM & 4GB storage. It also has all the usual ports, including HDMI and a full-size USB to connect flash drives.  
PROS Impressive hardware, best performance in
this group, full size USB port, loud & clear speaker, 4 hour battery life  
CONS
It's a fingerprint magnet (glossy finish on
body & display), average camera, poor viewing angles, few preloaded apps
